it's been a few weeks (or days) since i've been so out of things to say that i have to post a meme instead of talking about how my posts suck. so:

the metamorphosis

some of you may wonder how semaphoria and i look like little asian ladies in one picture and dancing white ladies in another. the answer is simple: we have amazing powers of disguise and often travel....incognito.

we's just cool like that.

she may look small, but she'll kick a hole right through you

happy birthday love!

update: yes, freddie, we do rock, but that is the second best picture ever. here's the first:

mary's danish tribute 2 of 2

With superflowers in your eyes you lay me
down time was I was dead. With colors in
your lake of hair you knock me out I don't
know why you said what you said. With
windows in your house of cards you steal
the one that I had up my sleeve. I don't
have anyplace to go to tonight I wonder
why you don't ask me to leave. Won't you
please? Well I'm crushed, everything is
beautiful. Can I trust, everything,

I used to be a skirtfull of hell. I used to lie
in a bed of snakes and snares I may look
small but I'd kick a hole right through
you. But I'm trying to change now.

I sometmes feel like I'm alone singularly
frightfully alone. I don't know where to
hang my hat when I don't even feel like
I'm at home. It's just like words to be the
ones to spell out all the rules. But you're
the angel come tonight you're not afraid
to tread on all the fools.

I used to be a skirtfull of hell. I used to lie
in a bed of snakes and snares. I may look
small but I'd kick a hole right, kick a hole,
right? I used to be a skirtfull of hell, I
used to lie in a bed of snakes and snares. I
may look small but I'd kick a hole right
through you. But I'm trying to change
now. And you hold the cards now.

i beg your pardon?

it's 90 minutes from april 28 (almost the fred's bday).

and it's SNOWING.

Donc, si on veut me les acheter, vas y!

so, my cousins had a baby a few weeks ago, and i've been wondering who will take the place on my pregnancy slot. (for those of you who don't know, i think i'm a fertility idol, and know at least 34 babies born in the past 2 years, and i typically know an average of 7 pregnant women at a time)

but since noah (yay!) was born on the 7th (mom wouldn't go to the hospital until the end of the american idol results show), there's been a slot.

i just learned that one of the women i know from school is 3+ months preggo and is coming back from the middle east to hang with her hubby and get her a ph.d.

whew. one less thing to worry about.

Mary's Danish tribute, part I of II

nothing's coming to mind right now, so i invite you to notice:

The Comfort Inn
is my silver glitterbox
an oyster is my world
A lumpy armchair sings
my only quiet song
waiting for the astroturf to grow

These are all the shapes
Nevada could have been

Fear's a big garage sale
in the palm of my hand
Temptation wears a purple velvet hat
A vampire makes my favorite noise
when he wears his gardening glove

These are all the shapes
Nevada could have been.

Toaster's at its best
when it sings a Spanish song
waiting for the dodo bird to sing
The sharpening knife is a wishbone pull
her beadsift is a curse
My dad is a receipt for a full tank of gas
from a Tennessee town.

think, people, think!

at school, there's an organization called CORD (center on rights development) that is particularly interested in humanitarian aid and human rights in general. knowing this, why on earth would they ever send out an email with this as the title?

the prettiest dress in the whole world - a picture

I couldn't find an exact picture of my dress because i bought it at new york and company, and they're one of those weird companies that doesn't sell anything on their website, only in their stores. so i found one that will suffice and i'll explain the differences.

my dress is a charming shade of french blue though, with white flowers, nothing ruffly, with spaghetti straps, a simple white cord around the waist, and hits about 2" below the knee.

(actually someone's selling the black version on ebay - so imagine it on a person, in french blue looking less crappy than it does in that picture)

i think it's generous...

...to refer to bologna as an "agricultural product."

vacation, all i ever wanted...

2 weeks without you and i still haven't gotten over you yet...

but i'm stressing about requirements, new internships, current internships, and that i have to take a class that will likely make me weep instead of going to romania for the summer...

so, i'm living for the 2 weeks between spring quarter and summer... known as summer vacation to those who get 4 months off.

i'm going to pretend i have no job, lay out by yaymee's pool with yaymee and crazy mara, go to the batting cages (i've been saying that for weeks, hasn't happened yet...), go to the movies, make halo-halo, knitknitknitknit, read books that are for fun, and in theory go camping on the sand dunes (i'm not really going to do that seeing how i hate camping and sand).

also, i bought the prettiest dress in the world, too so that i can have it to wear at some point during the break. or during other times. so, really, i'm quite flexible, you see.

здравствулте! ciao! γειάσου! 여보세요!

i've been writing sucky posts lately.

the one i just deleted that was here was no exception.

the past 2 days...

i've started about 8 postings since friday night... and discovered the following:

i got nothing.

mark this weekend down on your calendars.

i have nothing to say.

throwing the gauntlet

according to cherz, if he doesn't survive his helicopter ride, i must cage fight p-man.

but i say, why wait for cherz' demise? we'd be far too sad to cage fight for at least a twelvemonth, and man do i want those nunchucks. cuz guys dig girls with skills. especially nunchuck skills.

besides, i have the ligers on my side - they're bred for their skills in magic and all...

hey, p-man, your mom's in college! (but will she make me some cheesecake anyway?)

time to prepare for the b-day!

so, the gogo's are playing on my birthday, so we are going to that. anyone wants to buy me a ticket, i'd accept gratefully! it's also the last day of the quarter - woohoo! so, after that, we're going 80's dancing at polly esthers! yay for 80's dancing!

remember, i always accept donations because you love me. or even if you have mildly positive feelings about me. well, it's probably easier to say that i always accept donations - nothing quid pro quo though. i want you to embrace your sheerly generous sides.

i'm in showbiz!

i'm a music supervisor for a film!

i love wednesdays...

no, not because it's hump day, but because this quarter, this busy, insanely work-laden quarter, it is my last day of workin' the 9-5 (or 7-3:30, whatever) until next monday!

thursdays rock. i get work done, i get errands run because i'm literally free until 6 pm on thursdays. i can finish my marburg virus briefing tomorrow. i can go buy more cheap tanks at old navy (being a shirt layerer, i love their layering camis that come in cross backs and regular - makes for interesting strappage) at 2 for $10! i can entice those cleaning gnomes to finally get to work in my house. i can read 800 million articles about kaiser wilhelm... okay, not looking forward to that one so much. but, are you gettin' my vibe here? i get to leave work for 4 hours for the NEXT 4 DAYS!!!

okay, before all you workin' stiffs who work 40+ hours start to griping, i just need to remind you that i am taking 18 credits, doing an internship, and almost drowning in homework this quarter. those things take up approximately 80 hours a week. that plus the 24 that i work equals 104 hours a week that is scheduled and irrevocably dedicated to stuff. that leaves me with 66 hours to sleep, do errands, and stick my head out of my hideyhole and go out for a drink in the middle of the night on fridays. and, those 24 hours that i work, pay precisely all of my bills, not including groceries. so i live off of the charity beer of others. man, i forgot how much it sucks not to have a regular income...

wait, i was so happy at the beginning of this post! damn money.

this morning while walking down the hall to my office, i dropped the following in a space of 15 feet:

  • keys
  • nalgene bottle
  • umbrella (supposed to have thunderstorms today - yay! just no hail yet. not ready for that)
  • keys (again)
  • sunglasses (from all the bending over they fell off my head)
  • and, evidently, the voluntary muscle control in my fingers

You Are 29 Years Old

Under 12: You are a kid at heart. You still have an optimistic life view - and you look at the world with awe.

13-19: You are a teenager at heart. You question authority and are still trying to find your place in this world.

20-29: You are a twentysomething at heart. You feel excited about what's to come... love, work, and new experiences.

30-39: You are a thirtysomething at heart. You've had a taste of success and true love, but you want more!

40+: You are a mature adult. You've been through most of the ups and downs of life already. Now you get to sit back and relax.

weekend update

friday: poker night was insanely fun. the people playing poker weren't having much fun (at least to my untrained eye), but MAN were yaymee, crazy mara and i having a blast when we were playing war. so much fun, in fact, i nearly fell out of my chair backwards. luckily, only they (plus one other person) out of like 40 saw that part. then the trivial pursuit deathmatch was established, albeit not scheduled. and, oh boy, will i ever win. then we went to the stadium inn which is crowded, sorta seedy, but you can throw rocks at andrew*'s house from there.

saturday: wanted to go batting, get a pedicure, neither of which happened (sad and sad). i wrote up my brief on the marburg virus, went to croc's saturday night with fritzie, pei lo mein, timmy, and jersey matt, but was very sleepy from previous night's revelries.

sunday: woke up around 8:45 slightly disconcerted. tried to figure out why, realized it was because i heard dripping. and it was sunny, so it wasn't the rain. explored, saw nothing, fell asleep for 30 more minutes, and heard definitive water running sounds. got up again, put on glasses this time, and saw that there was a leak coming from the people upstairs (who are being evicted, btw) into my kitchen sink. leaks have plagued me since august in this apartment. so i went upstairs and knocked on their front door. nothing. so i knocked on their back door, still nothing. so i called the landlord, and he came over, and walked into the apartment upstairs to get shouted at by the tenants who had decided not to answer their door. turns out that THEIR TOILET FLOODED INTO MY KITCHEN ON THE THINGS I USE FOR EATING FOOD. (yeah, there's some dish washing with bleach in my future) cleaned that mostly up, realized i needed to shower and beautify for the ballet. yes, in my class, "outbreak of war" we had to go see the colorado ballet's production of hunchback of notre dame. which was just awful. i may be spoiled, having lived in close proximity to LA, having lived in boston, having seen the new york city ballet (an odd mixture of a classical piece, another that made no impression on me whatsoever, and a piece about lizzie borden). but this was the first time i've seen a ballet that didn't have an orchestra, but rather danced to a recording of the music. and the music was not so good... it could not have been more schizophrenic if it tried. it had baroque parts, classical parts, impressionistic parts, romantic parts, and some random elizabethan inspired dance pieces. the costumes were also really anachronistic: renaissance nobility next to 19th century french peasants. and the company? pretty bad. the principals were mostly really good (sharon wehner as esmerelda in particular was wonderful) and i left after the second act because i was annoyed. and remember, this ballet was to go along with the class OUTBREAK OF WAR. if there's a genuine connection between the two i'll let you know. anyhow, i went to lodo's to drop something off with crazy mara, went home to change my clothes, and went to the library to finish the last 500 pages of my book i have to write a report on for wednesday, realized i would get nothing done because i was falling asleep in the library, went to target, and bought clothes, went home, knitted 2" of the back of kyoto, then went to sleep.

*a superhero name for andrew isn't presenting itself to me immediately. i'll work on it.

because i don't like it when people are unhappy when there's something that can be done about it

so, erik, what else do you like?

i can't get enough of the following songs lately:

ain't no sunshine by bill withers
cherry, cherry by neil diamond
but anyway by blues traveler
seek up by dave matthews
collide (acoustic) by howie day
wonderwall by oasis
you're gonna make me lonesome when you go by bob dylan
you're gonna make me lonesome when you go by shawn colvin
doves cry by prince

but the flesh is weak

i cast on the back of kyoto.

in cross-breeding news...

...continuing my fascination and revulsion involved in breed-crossing, the first captive-born wholphin was born not so long ago in hawaii.

unrelated: i may very well have met my ego match with regard to trivial pursuit. there was much trash talking last night, but we have yet to set a date for the match to end all trivial pursuit matches.

i'll let you know when i win, but since i'm a nice girl, i'll try not to crush his ego into the ground.

friday smatterings

laundry day

literally. the problem is, i have about 6 rows to go (finally) on the sash of kyoto and a ton of reading to do as well. argh... what to do? what??

next on my list is either the minisweater (aka boobholder) or the hot lava sweater that jess at fig and plum brought to my attention... but now i'm busy thinking about me me me me! and there are some other people on my knitlist that i wanna make stuff for.

did i mention i have a ton of reading to do? i can't wait until june when i have tons of time to knit and i won't feel guilty about putting off doing stuff for school...

i love that my friends are just ricidulous

Truly, that's about all I have at the moment - it's been a long, long day. Besides, who can concentrate when Britney just announced she's pregnant? Any thoughts or input?

partner #1: Thoughts? I was very surprised that Britney is pregnant. I can't believe she is having a kid with that Federline character. I mean I know she is a little trashy but he is soooooo trashy.

partner #2: Yes. Print that baby out and let's turn it in. Thanks for taking initiative. As for Britney, I can't psychoanalyze the bitch, but she does idolize Madonna, who probably talked her into getting pregnant.

get it out, get it out, get it out!

today's annoying song playing on a mental loop:

whitney houston's cover of "i will always love you."

man, i wish i had control of the dj in my brain...

so glad i don't get furballs

last night, i ate something that made my throat swell. now, i've carried benadryl and an epinephrine pen around for a few years once my allergies started getting worse (could they have gotten worse? evidently, yes). but usually i just break out in extremely sexy hives and get sort of nauseous. it's my sister that has the fatal allergies, i just have the very visible and annoying but non-fatal ones. i've been at risk for them my whole life though, and the food allergies just put me one teeny step closer.

last night i entered that territory. when the beginnings of anaphylaxis occured.

last night there was sheer panic. do you know how freaky it is to think that your throat may swell SHUT? (if you do, i am SO sorry) i took a BUNCH of benadryl, and climbed in bed with my knitting and my epi-pen about 18 inches away. and whilst knitting frantically went through everything i had ingested in the past 4 hours or so. which involved orange juice and triscuits (the study food of champions). to neither of which am i allergic. (okay, i also had a small sundae from good times, but there was only chocolate and ice cream involved.)

crazy mara, peach that she is, offered to sleep with her phone on her pillow in case there was an ER trip in my future, but i told her that the fire department is closer to me by about 3 miles than she is, so she could go to sleep soundly.

the story ends like this: i finally get knocked unconscious by the benadryl, wake up alive (hurrah!), but feeling like crap, and i can still feel my uvula resting on my tongue. which is just a revolting sensation.

you poker, you brought her

on friday night, one of the school organizations is...well, organizing...a texas hold 'em tournament in the cyber cafe on campus. here's the text of the announcement email that was sent last night:

"Hello everyone,

OSS is sponsoring a poker tournament in the Cyber Cafe on Friday, April 15th. There will be more information about this event in the next day or two, but before we can go any further we still need a couple more people to deal cards for the tournament. If anyone is interested in helping out please let me know. This is a great opportunity for anyone looking for free drinks and possibly some other prizes. If you don't know how to deal, we can teach you!

[name deleted]"

please read the 4th sentence: This is a great opportunity for anyone looking for free drinks and possibly some other prizes.

therein lies the reasons people come to du. last weekend was preview weekend for newly accepted students. they had a wine and cheese reception for those students. a mere 24 hours before that, they had a wine and cheese reception for the visiting faculty. on friday night, they hosted a social at a bar. during my student orientation in september, they had a wine and cheese reception.

this is the drinkingest school i've ever known.

and i even went to college in new orleans.

missing my cariboux

when i was just shoveling the walk and the yard so that i wouldn't be up into my knees in snow when i went to my security dinner tonight and the dog wouldn't be up to his ears when nature called, i really missed my sorels. i still think one of my roommates stole them like 10 years ago.

this is what they looked like:

the model name? caribou.

she didn't love me, but she sure loved my cariboux...

small talk topic: the weather

not so long ago, i said i was happy because it was 72 degrees and sunny. see?

then yesterday, there was a blizzard warning for today. see?

today, they've upped the snowfall levels to 15-30" of snow. so i went to the nbc affiliate to peek at the webcam. and it is covered in snow. see?

it just started snowing about 4 hours ago, and already the (large) dog is up to his belly in snow.

the good news? i'll get to stay home all day long today to do homework homework homework. (yesterday i got to read a seriously seriously kickin' article about a. tolkachev)

the bad news? i can't get any work done when i'm at home and i'll probably wind up knitting alllllll dayyyyy long. i also don't have an espresso machine here.

the good news? i get to knit alllllll dayyyyy long.

question for erik:

will you please wear a black mask all the time?

i want to do me some knittin' now that i am excited about not being so uptight with the needles and am basically starting from scratch...

i want to go to the battin' cages since it's still sunny and supposed to get all nasty and wintry again this weekend...

i have about 600 pages of reading for classes this week that i need to do over the weekend because it don't happen during the week...

what's a girl to do? who will win? sloth and craftiness? outdoors and procrastination? or boring boring work?

hey, loosen up, you!

i just frogged kyoto for the third time. because i had used 2 of my 3 skeins of cc1 and was only 1/3 finished with the sash.

i have a problem.

i am a tight knitter.

and with the new spring issue of knitty, (yay!) there's a whole article on tight knittin' and loosenin' it up.

so i relaxed and for once in my life, my swatch is the right gauge as recommended in the pattern!!

yay! so i'll use less yarn and it will take far fewer stitches to finish a row!

hee hee!

my favorite google search string to wind up here?

kids sneezes nonstop allergies

which is suppose is funnier if you've ever heard me sneeze

i mean, seriously.

so, today is one of my co-workers' last day, and so we're having a good lunch to celebrate (no martinis - the hospital has one of those "don't drink while you're working, fool!" policies).

on monday, i slipped over to à la tomate for a late lunch and got an amazing salad (baby spinach with fresh tomatoes, cucumbers, sprouts, grilled chicken, and goat cheese with balsamic vinegar on the side). when i walked back in, 2 people said, "oooh! that looks amazing!" including the one who's leaving today. so she said she wanted that for her going away lunch.

one person in the office refuses to eat any of their "recommended" sandwiches because she thinks they're gross. i told her yesterday twice and 3 times today she could make her own.

and i directed everyone to the website to look at their menu. granted, their menu isn't the most user friendly menu on the planet. too many pages, and poor layout. (remember, i'm the IT goddess in this office - yes, IT calls ME TO ASK QUESTIONS ABOUT THINGS. i have a CS degree granted... wait, no i don't, i have a MUSIC DEGREE) so they asked me approximately 10 questions apiece (there are 5 other people here) until i told them to leave me alone, and i went to the website and built a menu into a word document to print out for them.

which did not help in the least. so more and more questions came. and they were tough questions:

  • what if i don't WANT eggplant on my sandwich? DON'T ORDER EGGPLANT is the answer
  • what if i want a tarte with just tomatoes, cheese, and red peppers? THEN ORDER IT LIKE THAT
  • i want a sandwich that i design myself, that's not one of the recommended sandwiches. can i have that? YES, IT'S CALLED DESIGN-YOUR-OWN (and i created a special subheading on the menu i made called: "[name deleted], these are the choices for the design-your-own sandwiches")
  • what if i want a salad with dressing on the side?

(are you with me here for the source of my frustration?)

seriously, are menus as a concept THAT tricky?

if they are, how did i ever go there my first time and walk out with food?

(yes, i'm feisty and bitchy today. this didn't make the process any easier on anyone. but REALLY)

such disobedience will no longer be tolerated

so, yaymee was being very disobedient last night and not looking at things i was instructing her to observe. very naughty behavior such as this usually ends up in corporal punishment, but i try to be merciful so she gets a second chance.

while these are NOT what i was trying to show her last night (i got complaints for showing her too many baby pictures - is it my fault i know so many frickin' babies?*), these are required viewing nonetheless... that is, required if you are yaymee - it's optional for everyone else. there is no rhyme or reason to these, they're just pictures. and there are no pictures of babies.

seriously, i would give my month's supply of coffee for a great yoga class... it's been too, too long.

*some of the babies i know born (or en route) since 2002 (not in chronological order): emma, the regan baby whose name i can't remember now, natalie, brian, patrick, dominic, annika, kaylie, anna, aaron, rachel, joseph, wilson, harrison, nicholas, aidan, gemma, max, michael, caleb, the m. bugnacki second baby (argh! can't remember name!), the n. bugnacki baby (never heard a name) christopher, kiera, anastasia, sophia, travis, natalie's brother, nicholas' sibling, gabe's brother, the gregory baby, the peppard baby... that's 33. i may have forgotten some. if i forgot your baby, oops! sorry - i'm having trouble keeping track anymore. and if you're not telling me about pregnant people, shame on you... i practically have a corporate account at target!

now that's fancy

this morning i learned that not only do you have to have sight training, but you also have to be instrument trained to shop at the portland farmer's market.

if it's monday morning...

...and i'm already slightly annoyed about money in general, here's a word of advice:

if you are the financial aid department at the university of denver, and you send me a notice telling me you don't have all the paperwork required to process my request for 2005-2006, and i fax it to you, please don't send me another email saying you only received 2 of the 5 forms, spurring me into action to call you to ask if in need to resend them only to have you be nasty to me saying that of course you got all of them, and my online profile should say that my request is in process and not missing any forms WHEN VERY CLEARLY IT DOES NOT SAY THAT HENCE THE REASON I CALLED YOU AT 8:01 AM MONDAY MORNING BECAUSE I SURE CAN'T AFFORD YOUR SCHOOL WITHOUT FINANCIAL AID.

i'm just speaking hypothetically, of course.

my friend, i love

there's this woman who's been my friend since 1989. we were 12 when we met in our 7th grade science class. i think we went roller skating the first time we hung out, and i helped her out with her science project (she was studying flexibility and whether stretching increased it). we were wholly unsuccessful at baking together, although the two of us could bake fine when we were on our own. we wrote a kickin' song based on boo radley. once, she called kevin and bean to tell them that bart connor was a jerk.

to her, my friend the woman, i sing this:

"I have a friend in a bright and distant town
She's found a common balance
Where you do your work, and you do your love
And they pay you, and praise your many talents
Well I'm passing through, and we know we won't sleep
She laughs, puts up the tea
She says "You know I think you remember every part of me."
And the water starts to boil
And if I had a camera
Showing all the light we give
And showing where the light extends
I'd give it to my friends"

flashing forward almost 16 years, she's married, she's pregnant, and she's due not on june 10, but 14 days earlier, in my ever-humble opinion. which gives her about 2 more months of pregnantness. and lately, she's tired, and frustrated, and feeling all-over wretched. she doesn't want to give birth just yet, because she knows it's too soon for the baby... but i think that physically she's ready and mentally she's ready, and she's just hit a point of frustration.

she's a mommy, and i am so happy for her. what an amazing mommy she'll be. she has an endless capacity for love, and a really low threshold for BS, she has a wicked sense of humor, and that really rare mixture of compassion and tough love. and she gets to share this with her son, whom i know she already loves, even for all the bladder poking he's doing.

so for her, the tired preggo, i sing this:

"One thing I know
This pain will go
Step through all that's left to feel
I wait to meet my love made real
Don't move don't touch
Don't talk so much
Strip and find the place to kneel
I wait to meet my love made real"

since i can't be there when he's born, i am going to sing this to her son from his mommy (since she swears she won't sing in front of others) all the way from here...

"Those men who lust for land
And for riches strange and new
Who love those trinkets of desire
Oh they never will have you

And they'll never know the gold
Or the copper in your hair
How could they weigh the worth
Of you so rare"

i'm changing the title of this post because it's been #1 on google when people google what used to be the title

today, i wandered around the inside of a mountain. the mountain that houses norad and northern command and strategic command, and of course was host to wargames a movie that was a staple in my childhood.

it was big, it was damp (seriously, the first humidity i've felt since i moved away from the south), and it was a bit of a letdown. i know WHY we can't go to the cool places, but seeing the industrial reservoir that holds the water, cooling the inside of the building, the 25-ton blast doors that take 35 seconds to close with hydraulics or 45 minutes by hand (ok, that was cool), and the air warning center (ok, that was cool too... i guess i wasn't impressed by the reservoir). we also saw the yoga room. and learned cool stuff...

okay, i had a cool day.

and now it's the weekend! yay!
