saturday night knitting update

i'm too hip for the bars, too hip for the parties, too hip for the club scenes.

instead, i stay home and knit while watching austin powers on vh1.

anyhow, i've started the elfine socks for the third time. and i don't even mind. this is because i've ventured for the first time into sock territory. i didn't think i would, but here i go! anyhow i'm using knitpicks essential in ash. this motif is essentially the same as in kiri which leads me to believe i may be fixated on grey leaves. grey is such a color of botanical life and vitality, after all.

anyhow, i started them on thursday and got 3 repeats into the lace pattern, and tried it on. it was too big on #1 needles. so today when i was buying new tires for the granny plow (yay tires!) i started it again on size 0 needles. and all was going well until i started the lace pattern and clearly lost the ability to count - i wound up having the right number of stitches, but stitch off by the end of each row.

so i cast on again a half hour ago, but since i loathe knitting in pairs, i cast on BOTH socks, and am doing it that way. (sleeves and gloves are the death of me - part of the reason i've never jonesed to do socks)

not enough for any sort of pictures. but BOY are size 0 needles tiny and hard to hold. anyhow.

i have another FO, it's a stripey snowboarding hat. i'll post pics later, with the details once the recipient either recipients it or he says its okay, but i will say that starting socks and learning toe-up cast-on methods made this hat way more fun.

i did a figure 8 cast-on and a top-down raglan hat. since i used lamb's pride worsted (duh), i did felted joins for the stripes and voila! i only had 2 ends to weave. yay!

knitting without pictures. so much fun, yes?

I always too hip for the party scene, but never too hip for the movie scene.

If you were in my class, I'd hang out with you, for sure.

Yay! Finally someone I can ask about Essentials!! Is it soft, or scratchy? Could it be used for a blanket?? Would a baby colntdx if touched by it?

Also, tonight I casted on 140 stitches for a blanket, and I started the first row, in seed stitch, which I'm not so crazy about. I got to my last marker (128 stitches in before I realized I was one off. I looked back, and I made the mistake in the FIFTH STITCH! Off to the frog pond! I'll start over tomorrow.

um, it is soft, but it's also mostly wool. so it's soft for a wool and nylon (?) blend. and a really light weight - and might not make the cuddliest blanket, being wool and rather thin. i'm using it as a sock yarn and i HATE bulky socks. it's probably not my first choice for a blanket.

and i tend to love seed stitch - especially if the alternative is any sort of ribbing. but the frogging stinks - can you redo the first five stitches when you do the next row?

The blanket is supposed to be wool, but the only wool (to be fair, Patons at Michael's) I've looked at so far is too scratchy. Warm, but scratchy. I think I'm going to have to bite the bullet and place an order at Knitpicks, and then have them throw in some Essential so I can see.

I couldn't fix it, because every stitch after the fifth one was off. I suppose I could have fixed the first four, and reversed my seed stitch, but I don't know how to do that. Oh well, too late now anyway.

And I only dislike seed stitch because I'm constantly moving yarn around.

the patons classic wool merino (my michael's doesn't carry it - yours may) i love (other than the pilling factor which appears to be endemic of all wool). it's what the frogged mariah is made of, and it's a worsted weight... i fear a woolen blanket made of fingering weight would be really thin, even if knitted on size 5s for some extra loft. have you looked at knitpicks wool of the andes or merino style?
