rehydration (or, why we block)

lace on bella is finito! now, it's just blocking.

and since i don't have a ginormous blocking surface, i'm blocking 1/2 of it at a time on my ironing board (which is orange, natch)

and this is why we block, especially lace:

it's like a grape next to a raisin, except raisin is its natural state, not grape.

anyhow, while this is drying, and then drying again on the other side, i'm going to start a hat as a giftie (since my yarn for my other gifties -- 2 shawls, a pair of socks, and a jumper -- hasn't arrived yet from knitpicks)

knitting seems to be a cool hobby these days. i knew a girl in college who "crocheted." i didn't know it was spelled like that till much later, and then i laughed, because i am young and immature.

also, can someone tell me what "natch" means?

i laughed too, because i am a 12 year old boy underneath it all.

natch = naturally.

:)

Hooray for jumpers! Such a better word than sweater - who wants to wear something that refers to bodily secretions? Ick.

heatherfeather Friday, December 02, 2005 10:40:00 am

well, to be fair, "pinafore" would be a better word. i was thinking "jumper" in the cordurouy, kindergarten teacher sense...

and kate - i felt pretty clever. :)

You're knitting an American jumper? I assumed sweater because I can't imagine knitting something that long...pattern?

before you worry too much about my lack of taste, it's for a baby, so it's smaller and cuter than an adult jumper.

it's anouk the orange will be a much apricot-yer color but the others are pretty close!

I have some gaberdeen (sp?) pants with the same design as your ironing board!

nyzhgl!

Ah. Context is everything!

So I can see how the blocking thing makes the lace all spread out and looking nifty, but what happens when you take it off the ironing board? Or does the ironing board become part of the finished clothing item? It would have to be for a pretty big person, because baby clothes with ironing boards incorporated into them don't seem very practical to me. I'm just saying.

AMAZING work! I think you're my knitting hero.

haiku-girl, thanks! you're on your way to being MY favorite commenter today! ;)

bryan, you just pin it to the ironing board while it's wet and leave it to dry. when it dries, it dries in the shape it was pinned. no need to wear fashionable ironing boards under your sweaters anymore!

steve - we'll only need to talk about the gabardine if you still wear those pants.

Steve Saturday, December 03, 2005 7:30:00 am

So would I have to justify my continued wearing of them by going through the gabardine proving grounds?

if you were drinking coffee when you read that, you probably said nzxdppba!
